ASO PostgreSQL version overrides and in-place upgrades

A successful, supported in-place upgrade retains existing databases and their data on the same server, keeping its name and connection endpoint. All databases on the server move to the target engine version.

Changing the API version

The rendered server should use v20250801:

apiVersion: dbforpostgresql.azure.com/v20250801

Confirm ASO supports the new API. Keep the server patch API matching the shared resource, then use an application-local JSON patch to replace /apiVersion after merging. This leaves the shared API and other applications unchanged. Build the configuration to verify the result. Unrelated ASO APIs need no change. Changing the API alone does not upgrade the engine.

Select a version

Check the shared manifest in SDS or CNP for the configured default. Override it in the team server patch using spec.version, for example "16" to retain 16 or "17" to select 17. Keep other settings unchanged; never select a lower version to downgrade a server.

Prepare and verify an upgrade

Follow Microsoft’s upgrade guidance: Test in non-production using a confirmed ASO upgrade method. Afterwards, verify your database version, data and application connectivity.

Example

The server uses this API and engine version:

apiVersion: dbforpostgresql.azure.com/v20250801
kind: FlexibleServer
spec:
  version: "17"

See Example PR for the Adoption configuration API and desired engine version changes. This PR does not verify a successful in-place upgrade.
