Introduction to justice sector technology

Learn how digital technology works across HMCTS and the wider justice system.

HMCTS delivers services across crime, civil, family and tribunal jurisdictions, spanning courts and tribunals across England and Wales. Digital technology increasingly underpins how cases are administered, listed, and heard.

How HMCTS systems fit together

Rather than one single system, HMCTS operates a range of case management systems by jurisdiction, connected through shared reference data and, increasingly, APIs published on this marketplace. This lets teams integrate with the specific capability they need — case administration, listings, hearing results — without needing access to an entire case management system.

Who builds and uses this technology

Digital services for the justice system are built by in-house HMCTS Digital and Technology Solutions teams, as well as approved third-party suppliers and justice sector partners, all working within the same architecture principles and data governance standards.

Where APIs fit in

The API Marketplace exists to make HMCTS data and capabilities discoverable and reusable, rather than every team building its own point-to-point integration. See our capabilities for the categories of business service on offer, and the API catalogue for what is available today.
